First, understand those three basic varieties of electric mobility scooters, the 3 wheel mobility scooter, the more stable 4 wheel variety, and the lightweight, but somewhat more basic compact style.

There are many types of 3 wheel mobility scooters on the market today, from a wide variety of manufacturers. Pride mobility scooters, ShopRider mobility scooters are a couple of examples of reputable manufacturers that both produce excellent products.

One of the first things I'd recommend one do is thoroughly research the attributes and unique benefits that the 3 wheel mobility scooter offers vs., the alternative 4 wheel mobility scooters and compact mobility scooters available.

First and foremost feature of the 3 wheeled varieties is its maneuverability and that they are generally very lightweight. This type of medical scooter can be either battery powered, or powered by a small gas engine, and obviously sports just 3 wheels, usually 2 at the back, on an axle under the seating area, & 1 at the front. The front wheel is also the steering wheel, and is generally operated by a handle bar similar to a bicycle, and steers the scooter by virtue of it's articulation.

When compared to the compact mobility scooter style, a 3 wheel mobility scooter is infinitely more durable and solid, and its design make tight turns a breeze. Perhaps one of the biggest attributes, (especially when compared to the compact variety) is the ample legroom they provide. This will be really appreciated by those that are tall, maybe suffer from bad knees & achy legs.

There are models for indoor use, outdoor use, and some that are suited for both, but the outdoor use will be generally be occasional & light duty. In fact a lot of models come complete with headlights, tail lights, even turning indicator lights. Most will have a device for attaching a lightweight pole with a flag that greatly enhances visibility when being operated outdoors.

To aid in your decision process you need to examine what you primarily will be using your electric mobility scooter for, indoors, outdoors, or a combination of both. Is maneuverability important to you? Do you need the extra legroom afforded by models such as the Go Go mobility scooter for example? Are you comfortable with the stability of the 3 wheel variety rather than a 4 wheel mobility scooter?

Get comfortable with what your exact needs are and select your 3 wheel mobility scooter accordingly.

I'm really pretty nervous around anything mechanical, and living alone don't have anybody around that could guide me . Do you think an old woman like me could handle the day to day upkeep of one of these? What about the 3 wheel style, don't they tip over?
